Shootaround Privacy Policy

Shootaround ("the app", "we") is a basketball shot-tracking app. This policy explains what the app accesses and what happens to that information. The short version: shot tracking runs entirely on your phone, and, with your OK, the app sends each session's shot data and diagnostic files to the developer, plus the session video while the phone is on wifi, so tracking can be improved. The app explains those uploads and asks before any of them start, and you can turn them off at any time in Settings. Uploads are switched off altogether in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom. You can also create an optional account (email and password, or your Google account) that backs up your session statistics; every tracking feature works without one. Some features need a Shootaround Plus subscription sold through Google Play; see "Subscriptions" below.

The short version

What the app accesses, and why

Camera. During a shooting session the camera watches the hoop and the ball so the app can call each shot make or miss, chart where shots were taken, and (optionally) read your stance to place the shot on the court. The picture is analyzed on the device while you shoot.

Microphone. The microphone is used to hear the ball bounce for dribble counting and timing. Audio is analyzed on the device. Microphone sound is also part of the session video whenever a session is being recorded.

Session video. A session is recorded by default once you have turned recording on (the setup cards ask the first time), because the video is what your reels and the automatic form check are made from and, when you have agreed to uploads, how the developer checks the app's calls against what really happened on the court. The "Record video" button on the session screen stops and restarts recording whenever you want. The recording saves the camera view and the microphone sound to a video file on your phone. It can show you and anyone else at the court, so please get their OK before you shoot. Only the newest few session videos are kept on the phone; older ones are deleted automatically, and you can delete them any time by clearing the app's storage. The session video only ever leaves the phone over wifi, and only while the video switch in Settings is on or you tap Upload yourself.

Short pre-shot image frames. To work out where on the court a shot was taken, the app keeps a few small still frames from just before each shot (these can include an image of the person shooting). These frames are stored only on your device, are used only for the on-device shot-position analysis, and are automatically limited to the most recent sessions; older sessions' frames are deleted as new ones are captured.

What is stored, and where

Session results (makes, misses, shot locations, timing), app settings, court calibration, and the short pre-shot frames described above are stored in the app's private storage on your device.

Device backups. Your session statistics (not video or images) are included in your device's own Google backup, so your history survives reinstalling the app or moving to a new phone. Backups are managed by Android and are not accessible to the developer.

Uploads

What is sent. After each session: that session's shot data, performance and diagnostic files, and crash reports if the app crashed. Diagnostic files include a small, low-resolution black-and-white clip of the hoop area around each shot, which can show anyone near the rim; it is sent with the diagnostic files whenever their switch is on, including when you have chosen not to record the session video. The session video is sent as well, and only while the phone is on wifi. No location, no contacts, nothing else.

Where it goes. Over an encrypted connection to the developer's private storage, hosted on Cloudflare. The storage is private, and nothing is posted anywhere public. Uploads are labeled with the random upload code the app generated for your install, which you can read on the app's Settings screen (the closed-beta app calls it the tester code). They are not labeled with your name, email, or any account, and the developer keeps no record of which upload code belongs to which person or account. If you also use an account, the session totals it backs up describe the same sessions as your uploads (the same start times and shot counts), so the two could be matched by comparing them. Each uploaded session also records your phone's model (for example "Google Pixel 8a"), so tracking problems can be tied to a device type. No other identifiers are collected.

Your controls. The app shows a dialog explaining these uploads and asks before it sends anything. Choosing "Not now" turns off both the diagnostic files and the video. Two switches in Settings (the gear on the home screen), one for diagnostics and one for video, turn either back on or off at any time. There is also an Upload button if you want to send a session yourself; like the automatic path, it sends video only over wifi.

Video recorded before you agreed is never uploaded automatically. Those sessions were recorded while the app said the video stays on your phone, so they leave the device only if you send them yourself with the Upload button.

Where uploads are not available. Uploads are switched off in the European Economic Area (the European Union plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) and in the United Kingdom. Our servers refuse any upload that arrives from those regions. App versions released after October 3, 2026 go further: there the app does not show the upload dialog, the two upload switches are off and cannot be turned on, the Upload button is not shown, and a session recorded there is never uploaded later, even from somewhere uploads are available. To apply this, our server looks at the country your internet connection comes from, and the app looks at your phone's mobile network country, SIM country and time zone. The app keeps only the answer (uploads available or not), on your phone. Everything else works the same in those regions, including the optional account. If your phone uploaded sessions from one of those regions before this change, you can have them deleted: see "Keeping or deleting your data" below.

What it is for. Fixing bugs and improving tracking accuracy. Uploaded copies are kept only for development, and are deleted on request.

Separately, if you install the app through Google Play and leave Play's standard crash reporting on, Google may collect anonymous crash and performance information at the operating-system level. That reporting is handled by Google Play, not by the app, and is governed by Google's own policies.

Your account (optional)

What it is for. An account backs up your per-session statistics (attempts, makes, shot-zone splits, streaks, and session dates) on our servers, so your history follows you to a new phone. Every tracking feature works without an account; the first-run account screen has a Skip link, and Settings can open it again any time.

What we store. Your email address, a random account id, and (if you signed up with a password) a salted cryptographic hash of that password, from which the password itself cannot be read. If you use Continue with Google, Google confirms your email address to us; we receive no password and no access to your Google account. That is everything: no name, no phone number, no contacts.

What syncs. Session statistics only, a few hundred bytes per session. Video, audio, and images never sync with your account. The uploads described above are a separate pipe and stay labeled with the upload code, not your account.

Where it lives. In the developer's private database, hosted on Cloudflare, reached only over encrypted connections.

Staying signed in. You stay signed in until you sign out in Settings.

Email from us. The only email we send is the sign-in codes described under Passwords, and a notice when someone tries to create an account with your address or to reset its password. It comes from no-reply@shootaround.app through Cloudflare, the company that hosts our server.

Passwords. Forgot yours? On the sign-in screen tap "Forgot password?": we email a 6-digit code to the account's address, and entering it with a new password signs you in and signs out every other phone on the account. Creating an account starts the same way, with a code emailed to the address, so an address can only be used by someone who reads its mail. If you no longer have access to that address, email shootaroundshottracking@gmail.com.

Deleting your account. Settings → Delete account permanently removes the account, every synced statistic and any subscription record from our servers, immediately (the subscription itself is cancelled in Google Play, not by deleting the account). If you no longer have the app, see shootaround.app/delete-data or email us from the account's email address.

Subscriptions (Shootaround Plus)

Some features (reel settings, reels without the logo, the shooting form check, two of the drills, and your lifetime stats and progress) need a Shootaround Plus subscription. It is sold through Google Play: Google processes the payment and holds your payment details, and we never see them. Google Play's own terms and refund policy apply to the purchase.

What we keep. When you subscribe, the app asks our server to confirm the purchase with Google. If you are signed in to a Shootaround account, our server keeps a record of the purchase (Google's purchase token, the product, its state and its renewal date) linked to your account, so your subscription follows your account onto a new phone, and it asks Google to confirm that record again from time to time. If Google cannot be reached at the time, we keep the purchase token and ask again later. Without an account, nothing about the purchase is stored on our servers; Google Play alone tells the app what you own.

Deleting your account deletes that record. It does not cancel the subscription itself: subscriptions are managed and cancelled in Google Play. The full terms are at shootaround.app/terms.

What we do NOT do

Keeping or deleting your data

Your data stays on your device until you remove it. To delete everything, clear the app's storage (Android Settings → Apps → Shootaround → Storage → Clear storage) or uninstall the app. Uninstalling removes all session data, images, and settings, and stops all uploads. Uninstalling does not delete an account you created. Use Settings → Delete account first, or the web path below.

Deleting data you have uploaded. Send us the upload code shown on the app's Settings screen (the closed-beta app calls it the tester code) and we will delete everything uploaded from that install: visit shootaround.app/delete-data or email shootaroundshottracking@gmail.com with the subject "Data deletion request" and the code in the message. We delete our copies and confirm back to you, normally within 30 days.

Deleting your account. In the app: Settings → Delete account (immediate and permanent). Without the app: email us from the account's email address with the subject "Account deletion request", or see shootaround.app/delete-data. Deleted within 30 days, normally much sooner.

Age

Shootaround is for ages 13 and up. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13; if you believe a child under 13 has created an account, write to us and we will delete it. Video and data uploads are for players 18 and older. To tell, the app asks for your birth month and year once and keeps only the age band it put you in, never the date; where Google Play shares an age band with the app (in regions where the law requires it), that band is used instead, and nothing about it is stored beyond the band. Age is used only to decide what the app offers you, never for advertising, analytics or profiling.

Security

Uploads travel over an encrypted connection (HTTPS) and land in private storage that only the developer can read. Nothing is served publicly, and the storage cannot be browsed by anyone else. Uploaded files are labeled with the random upload code and carry no name, email or account. A session's diagnostic file also records technical details of that session: your phone's make and model, its Android version, the app version, battery level and temperature state, your upload settings, when you agreed to uploads, and the choices you made on the setup cards. If you create an account, your password is stored only as a salted cryptographic hash (we cannot read it), and signing in with Google shares no password with us at all. On-device data is protected by Android's standard app-sandboxing and by your device's own lock screen and encryption. The app has no advertising and no third-party analytics or telemetry of any kind.

This website

This website (shootaround.app) runs on Cloudflare and uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits. When you open one of its pages in a browser, a small Cloudflare script reports which page you opened, the site that linked you to it, your country, your device type, browser, and operating system, and how quickly the page loaded. The script uses no cookies, and Cloudflare states that it collects no personal data and does not track you across websites. The app never loads this script.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the "Last updated" date above will change and the current version will be posted at this URL. Material changes will be reflected before or when a new app version that affects them is released.
